Planning your Solo Vacation

Updated: Jun 10, 2023

Planning a solo vacation can be an exciting and rewarding experience. If you're anything like me, the planning of the vacation is nearly as much fun as going on the trip! Here are some steps you can take to start planning your solo vacation.

1) Determine your budget

Before you start planning your vacation, it's important to figure out how much you can afford to spend. This will help you narrow down your options and make the most of your trip. You can have just as much fun on a budget trip as you can when you splurge, but it's important to come up with a dollar amount so you have a roadmap. The budget can also help you decide what's most important to you; for instance, I would rather spend more on where I'm staying vs on an upgraded or higher class plane ticket.

2) Choose your destination

Consider the type of vacation you want to take and the activities you enjoy. Do you want to relax on a beach or explore a new city? Would you like to check a new country off your list, or plan a second (or third!) trip vacation to somewhere you love? Once you have an idea of what you want, research destinations that fit your criteria.

3) Consult a travel agent

Travel agents are experts and can help you get the most out of the destination you've chosen. Their expertise and background will save you tons of time and energy, and it's always great to get their recommendations based on their own personal experiences as well as feedback from their other clients.

They can also take some of the stress out of planning your trip. If you're not someone who enjoys the research involved with planning a vacation, a travel agent can be your best friend who does the legwork, then you can just choose, book it and go!

4) Create an itinerary

Make a list of the places you want to visit and the activities you want to do. This will help you make the most of your time and ensure you don't miss out on anything. You won't get to everything, and you might change plans once you get there, but having an idea of where you'd like to go and what you'd like to see when you get there is a good start.

5) Research local customs and laws

If you're traveling to a foreign country, it's important to research local customs and laws. This will help you avoid any misunderstandings and ensure you have a safe and enjoyable trip.

6) Pack smart

Make a list of the essential items you need to bring with you on your trip. Pack light, but make sure you have everything you need to be comfortable. Consider packing with a capsule wardrobe in mind; choose 3-4 colors that coordinate together so you can mix and match what you've brought to create multiple outfits.

7) Stay safe

As a solo traveler, it's important to take extra precautions to stay safe. Be aware of your surroundings and avoid dangerous areas. Keep your valuables in a safe place and let someone know your itinerary.

Planning a solo vacation takes some careful planning, but it's a very fun, rewarding and unforgettable experience.
